Parliament to Start Registration for 9th Parliament Members

Ghana prepares for the transition to its 9th parliamentary term

The Parliamentary Service of Ghana announced that registration for Members-elect of the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic will commence on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

The process will initially be conducted online, transitioning to physical registration at Parliament House in Accra from January 2 to January 6, 2025.

However, Camilo Pwamang, Deputy Coordinator of the Dissolution/Inauguration Committee and Deputy Clerk to Parliament, outlined these timelines in a statement released Monday, December 23.

According to Graphic Online, he emphasized the importance of adhering to the schedule as part of the preparations for dissolving the 8th Parliament and inaugurating the 9th Parliament.

Key events scheduled for January 2025

Several critical events will follow the registration process. On January 6, 2025, the election of the Speaker of Parliament will take place at 11:00 p.m., with all Members-elect expected to be seated by 9:00 p.m. Immediately after, the Speaker-elect and Members-elect will be sworn in at midnight.

Additionally, the inauguration of the President-elect and Vice President-elect is scheduled for January 7, 2025, at Independence Square, Accra. Parliamentarians will be transported to the venue, and all attendees must be seated by 9:00 a.m.

Furthermore, the ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m., represents the final stage of the transition to a new parliamentary term and administration.

Preparations for a seamless transition

The dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament are pivotal moments for Ghana’s democracy.

Also, the Parliamentary Service has urged all Members-elect to complete registration on time and attend the events as scheduled to ensure a smooth transition.

Moreover, this series of activities underscores Ghana’s commitment to democratic principles, continuity of governance, and a seamless transfer of leadership.

The swearing-in ceremonies of the Speaker, Members-elect, President-elect, and Vice President-elect are critical milestones in this process, symbolizing the nation’s adherence to its constitutional framework.
