Key points

  • The NPP wants records on the GH¢49 million spent evacuating 1,964 Ghanaians.
  • It says some evacuees cannot be traced in the available records.
  • It wants the documents sent to the RTI Commission and Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

The New Patriotic Party has given Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa seven days to produce documents accounting for the reported GH¢49 million spent evacuating 1,964 Ghanaians fleeing xenophobic violence in South Africa.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, NPP National Communication Director Dennis Miracles Aboagye said documents supplied by the ministry do not reconcile with the expenditure figures the minister presented.

What the party wants

Aboagye demanded a full set of financial and operational records. These include invoices for chartered flights, receipts, payment vouchers, distribution records, and a list of evacuees with proof of payments made to each beneficiary.

The party alleges that some evacuees cannot be traced in the available records, raising questions about whether the spending can be fully accounted for.

Documents, not assurances

The NPP insists Ablakwa must back every transaction with documentary evidence rather than media appearances, presentations and verbal assurances.

It also questioned his claim that all relevant documents are available, arguing they should have been included in the ministry’s response to a Right to Information request.

As a result, it wants the records submitted to the RTI Commission and Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee for independent examination.

The party acknowledged the need to protect Ghanaians affected by the violence. However, it said the humanitarian nature of the evacuation does not exempt the government from accounting for public funds. The source does not include a response from Ablakwa or the ministry.
