In a statement issued on December 11, 2024, the GBA urged citizens to end acts of lawlessness, such as property destruction and illegal office takeovers, which have been reported in some areas since the elections.

The association lauded Ghanaians for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process, which took place on December 7, 2024. The GBA described the elections as a demonstration of Ghana’s democratic maturity, reflecting the nation’s growing reputation as a model for democratic processes in Africa.

Recognizing the efforts of election stakeholders, the GBA commended the electoral commission, security agencies, and observers for ensuring a transparent process. “The GBA acknowledges the role played by all stakeholders in delivering a peaceful election that reflects the will of the people,” the statement read.

The GBA extended its congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging his victory as a reflection of the people’s choice. In its statement, the association emphasized that “the good people of Ghana have overwhelmingly spoken in his favor,” marking a new chapter in the country’s political landscape.

The association also praised outgoing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his display of statesmanship by conceding the election defeat in a timely and honorable manner. The GBA highlighted the importance of such actions in promoting political stability and peaceful transitions of power.

Dr. Bawumia’s concession was seen as a demonstration of democratic maturity, earning him praise from citizens and civil society groups. “His decision to concede shows leadership and respect for the democratic process, which is essential for fostering peace and unity,” the GBA added.

Calls for unity, end to lawlessness, and adherence to legal processes

Despite the peaceful nature of the election, the GBA expressed concern over reports of isolated violence, including incidents involving gunfire that led to the loss of lives.

The association extended condolences to affected families and urged law enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate all reported infractions and bring perpetrators to justice.

According to Graphic Online, the GBA also called on Ghanaians to prioritize peace and national unity. The statement urged all citizens to refrain from acts of violence, including property destruction and the illegal occupation of offices by supporters of political parties.

“Protecting Ghana’s unity and tolerance requires the collective effort of all citizens,” the GBA noted. It encouraged aggrieved parties to use legal channels to resolve disputes, rather than resorting to violence.

The association emphasized its belief that Ghana will continue to stand as a beacon of democracy in Africa, demonstrating that peaceful elections and smooth transitions are achievable on the continent.
