As Ghana starts its transition process after the 2024 general elections, outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged cooperation, openness, and respect for one another.

Akufo-Addo calls for transparency and collaboration in transition

Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of following the Transition Act in order to protect Ghana’s democratic reputation while speaking during the transition team’s inauguration at the Accra International Conference Centre.

By closely following the guidelines set forth in the Transition Act, we must continue to solidify this well-earned reputation. We convey a strong message to the world that, despite difficult circumstances, democracy flourishes in Ghana,” he stated.

In order to guarantee a seamless and effective transfer of power, the president asked members of the departing administration and the incoming government, headed by President-elect John Mahama, to cooperate.

“I encourage all team members, from the departing administration and the incoming administration, to approach this task with a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect as we embark on this transitional process,” Akufo-Addo stated.

The transition team, which is made up of officials from both administrations, is responsible for protecting important state policies, guaranteeing the seamless transfer of government operations, and preserving continuity in important national initiatives. It is anticipated that their efforts will reduce any disturbances that might affect public services and government.

Adhering to the Transition Act to uphold democracy

The duties and responsibilities of departing and incoming officials are outlined in the Transition Act, which was created to manage the change of government. It guarantees the correct transfer of important state data, records, and administrative procedures. Ghana hopes to preserve its standing as a stable democracy in the area by abiding by the Act.

According to myjoyonline, Ghana’s peaceful handover of power has been cited by observers as an example for other African countries. Both the departing and incoming administrations have been urged by international partners and regional civil society organizations to conduct themselves honestly at all times.

Former President John Mahama, who served Ghana from 2012 to 2017, returned for the 2024 elections. His reelection signifies a dramatic change in the political landscape of the country, making a smooth and transparent transition even more crucial.

All eyes are on the transition team to preserve Ghana’s democratic values, as the country’s reputation for peaceful transitions is at stake.
