In a steadfast assurance to the nation, Ghana’s military leadership has affirmed its dedication to preserving the country’s constitution, respecting the people’s sovereign will, and ensuring the uninterrupted tranquility and democracy of the state.
Addressing growing concerns over the recent coups in West Africa, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, declared, “While such developments elsewhere are unsettling, the Ghana Armed Forces remains committed to upholding our Constitution and the popular choice of our citizens.”
During a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) leadership, led by its President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, in Accra, he made these remarks. This engagement served as a platform to explore areas of mutual interest between the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the GJA.
“We exist to defend the nation’s borders, not to govern. If citizens desire a change in leadership, our democratic setup allows them to make that choice every four years,” the Vice Admiral passionately explained, emphasizing the Armed Forces’ non-political nature.
He emphasized that people should dismiss any idea of military coups. In modern Ghana, most citizens understand that the GAF doesn’t handle governance.
Speaking about the media, Amoama said, “Though the media might sometimes highlight fears of military involvement, I promise our primary focus remains the nation’s safety and integrity.”
Vice Admiral Amoama thanked the GJA and the broader media community for their pivotal contributions in safeguarding the people’s will. He also highlighted the importance of ethical journalism, advocating for consultation with the GAF on sensitive security stories before publication.
“Timely dialogue can often present a clearer picture,” he stated, recounting a recent operation in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, where consultation with the Ghana Bar Association yielded a shared understanding.
Emphasizing the GAF’s transparency, he encouraged journalists to showcase challenges and positive strides within the Armed Forces, asserting, “It’s not solely negative narratives that resonate; our numerous positive advancements deserve the spotlight, too.”
Regarding military-media relations, GJA President Dwumfour recognized the notable growth in the collaborative bond over the years, crediting this partnership with strengthening Ghana’s democracy.
“Due to our harmonious relationship, the media operates without apprehensions regarding military interventions,” he stated. Dwumfour also expressed the GJA’s continued commitment to fortifying this bond, pledging regular dialogues with the GAF to foster understanding and mutual respect.
