Ho West MP Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah says he will not seek re-election if Ghana’s controversial Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill fails to pass and receive presidential assent.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, Bedzrah said his decision is rooted in moral conviction, not political calculation.
“If it’s not assented to, I will not come back to Parliament again,” he declared. “If I don’t have a moral principle to guide the generations unborn, then what am I doing?”
Proper Human Sexual Rights Bill divides lawmakers
The lawmaker described the bill which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ activities and promote conservative family values as a defining part of his political life.
“That is my whole life,” Bedzrah said. “Some of us did not enter Parliament for politics but for principles. We are there for the advancement of this country.”
He also accused Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of being “untruthful” about claims that he once tried to amend the bill. According to Bedzrah, “He has never come to us as sponsors either to change or do any amendment. This is the first time I’m hearing this.”
Sponsors stand firm on Proper Human Sexual Rights Bill
Bedzrah, one of eight co-sponsors of the bill, said he worked closely with other MPs, including Ntim Fordjour and Sam George, to ensure its passage.
He dismissed reports of internal divisions, insisting that sponsors remain united behind the measure. “We meet as eight members to agree on how to go about this business,” he said.
The MP emphasized that the issue transcends politics, calling it a matter of national morality. “My position is firm if the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill is not assented to, my 16-year journey in Parliament ends,” he said.
