Announcing the endorsement on Facebook, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS is expected to formally adopt the decision on Sunday.

“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” he posted.

The AU Chairperson role includes two key positions: the rotating Head of State, providing high-level political leadership for one year, and the Chairperson of the AU Commission, acting as the organisation’s CEO and administrator for a four-year term. The Commission Chair manages finances, implements policies, and drives the continental agenda.

Election process and responsibilities explained

Candidates for the AU Commission Chair undergo pre-screening by a Panel of Eminent Africans, which evaluates skills and experience. Regional blocs nominate preferred contenders, and aspirants often participate in televised debates to share their vision. The final election requires a two-thirds majority in the AU Assembly via secret ballot.

While the rotating AU Chair provides broad political leadership, the AU Commission Chair operationally executes the Union’s agenda across Africa.

With ECOWAS’s endorsement, Mahama’s candidacy gains momentum, reinforcing Ghana’s influence in continental affairs and highlighting West Africa’s role in shaping Africa’s leadership for 2027.
