The Electricity Company of Ghana has announced a nationwide meter audit as part of measures to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.
The exercise will cover all operational areas. Field officers will inspect and verify prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff installations and associated wiring to confirm that metering systems are sound and that measurement and billing are accurate.
No advance notice
In a public notice, ECG said it will not issue prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications before officers visit premises.
Landlords, estate managers, facility managers and security personnel were told that the lack of a separate letter must not be used to deny, restrict or delay access to authorized staff.
The utility cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413).
It requires consumers to give utility employees or agents safe and reasonable access to read meters or check equipment, once they produce a verifiable identity card and follow the procedure in the utility’s customer charter.
How to verify officers
To guard against impersonation, all participating staff and agents will carry official identification cards. ECG urged customers to verify them through the Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or by dialing *226# on any mobile network.
Customers should select Option 5 to verify staff and enter the six-digit code the officer provides, which displays the officer’s full name, region and district. The notice did not give a start date or a duration for the audit.
