British Airways (BA) has announced that it will increase its flights between London and Accra, Ghana’s capital, from October 29, 2023. The UK’s flag carrier will launch a new service from London Gatwick Airport and its existing daily flights from London Heathrow Airport. This will give Ghanaian travellers more options, convenience and flexibility when flying to and from the UK.

The new service will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, using a Boeing 777 aircraft with economy, premium economy and business classes. A fourth weekly flight will be added in April 2024. The flights will depart from Gatwick at midday and arrive in Accra at 6:35 pm local time. The return flights will leave Accra at 9:20 pm and land in Gatwick at 4:00 am.

The Gatwick route will offer Ghanaian travellers an alternative gateway to London, where they can enjoy the recently refurbished lounges at the airport. Premium customers and Gold and Silver Executive Club members will also benefit from Gatwick’s enhanced services and facilities.

The expansion of flights to Accra is part of BA’s broader strategy to restore and strengthen its Africa network, especially after the downturn that hit the aviation industry during the global economic crisis. BA has been flying to Ghana for over 85 years and considers it one of the important routes in its portfolio. The airline is committed to providing world-class services and products to its Ghanaian customers and supporting the country’s economic growth and development.

According to the African Development Bank, Ghana is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, with a projected GDP growth of 5.1% in 2023. The country has a vibrant relationship with the UK as a commonwealth country and a major trading partner. The increased flights will boost trade, tourism and investment between the two nations and create more opportunities for Ghanaian exporters and importers.

The increased flights will also benefit Ghanaian passengers who want to connect to other destinations in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. BA offers flights to over 65 countries, including popular destinations such as New York, Paris, Dubai and Hong Kong. The airline is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through its sustainability programme, BA Better World.

The increased flights to Accra show BA’s confidence and optimism in the Ghanaian market and the African region. The airline hopes to offer customers more choice, value, quality, and a safe and comfortable travel experience.
