The largest airline in Africa eyes the second-largest city in Ghana as a potential destination

by Motoni Olodun

Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa, has expressed interest in operating direct flights to Kumasi, the second-largest city in Ghana. The airline is currently conducting traffic analysis and seeking regulatory approvals to service the Kumasi International Airport, which is undergoing a major expansion project.

The Kumasi Airport project, which started in 2018, aims to transform the airport into a regional hub that can accommodate larger aircraft and more passengers. The project includes the extension of the runway from 1,981m to 2,320m, the construction of a new two-story terminal building, additional aprons, restaurants, shopping and parking areas, and a ring road around the airport.

Ethiopian Airlines is one of the leading airlines in Africa, with a fleet of over 120 aircraft and a network of more than 125 destinations across five continents. The airline is also a member of the Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance. Ethiopian Airlines currently operates flights to Accra, the capital of Ghana, and plans to increase its frequency from 10 to 14 flights per week.

Introducing direct flights from Ethiopian Airlines to Kumasi would boost the city’s and the Ashanti region’s economic and tourism potential. Kumasi is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical attractions, and vibrant markets. The city is also home to the largest natural lake in West Africa, Lake Bosomtwe.

The Ghanaian government has been investing in the development of the aviation sector as part of its vision to make Ghana an aviation hub in West Africa. The government has also implemented policies to attract more airlines and passengers to the country, such as reducing taxes on aviation fuel and abolishing visa requirements for African citizens.

The direct flights from Ethiopian Airlines to Kumasi are expected to commence soon, subject to the airport expansion project’s completion and the relevant authorities’ approval. The airline has assured its customers of its commitment to providing safe, reliable, affordable air travel services.

Ethiopian Airlines looks forward to connecting Kumasi with the rest of the world and enhancing its presence in Ghana and West Africa.
