The National Communications Authority (NCA) has begun implementing the ECOWAS “Free Roaming Initiative” to lower the cost of telecommunication services for Ghanaians traveling within the region.
The agreement, which currently includes Ghana, Benin, and Togo, will allow citizens to make calls, send SMS, and access the internet at reduced rates across borders.
Seamless communication for citizens
Speaking at the launch event in Accra, Deputy Minister of Communication, Charles Acheampong, praised the initiative as a step forward in fostering regional integration and cooperation.
He emphasized that it would provide citizens with “affordable and seamless” communication across the three countries, eliminating the need for expensive roaming charges or multiple SIM cards.
“This initiative symbolizes our commitment to advancing regional integration within the ECOWAS community. It will also have a positive impact on cross-border trade and encourage more travel within the sub-region,” Acheampong said.
A boost for regional cooperation
The Free Roaming Initiative is expected to strengthen not only communication but also economic ties between the participating countries.
According to Graphic Online, Acheampong added that the agreement would positively affect trade, agriculture, and tourism while making life easier for citizens who frequently travel within the region.
He also highlighted the importance of secure and stable telecommunication networks to ensure the success of the initiative. “Cybersecurity threats are a reality in the digital age, and it is incumbent upon us to implement robust measures to protect the privacy and data of our citizens,” he added.
Next steps for the region
The NCA, along with mobile telecommunication companies, plans to monitor the usage of the initiative and gather feedback for future improvements.
The Vice Chair of the ECOWAS Roaming Implementation Committee, Mr. Yaw Boamah Baafi, mentioned that the initiative offers citizens up to 30 days or 300 minutes of free roaming.
Representatives from Benin and Togo also expressed their excitement about the initiative and urged other West African nations to join the agreement to further enhance regional integration.
