Ghanaians are experiencing widespread internet disruptions due to outages on multiple undersea fiber optic cables. The National Communications Authority (NCA) confirmed the issue in a press release, attributing the problem to cable breaks in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and Portugal.
This has led to a significant degradation of data services across Ghana.
“It is important to note that the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are working around the clock to restore full services. In addition, the MNOs have informed affected customers of the disruptions via various channels,” the NCA added.
These critical cables serve as the backbone for international internet traffic, and their disruption significantly impacts mobile and fixed data services across the nation.
Limited Service, Efforts Underway
The NCA reports a noticeable decline in data quality throughout Ghana. However, mobile network operators (MNOs) are actively working to restore full service. Additionally, they have kept customers informed through various communication channels.
In another press statement issued by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications on Thursday, March 14, 2024, it was explained that “further investigations are being carried out, as well as work to resolve the current problems to restore service to our customers.”
It said some of the fibre optic cables are down while others are delivering limited capacity.
“This is impacting internet, data and Voice over IP (VolP) services of the members of the Chamber; the Mobile Network Operators and the Data Service Providers to varying degrees. As a result customers and subscribers are currently experiencing service challenges.”
While some cables are completely down, others are functioning at a reduced capacity. This situation varies the degree of service disruption experienced by different customers.

Both the NCA and the GCT emphasize ongoing efforts to resolve the issue. Technicians are conducting investigations and working diligently to restore full service as quickly as possible.
