NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi Blasts Government for Misusing Ghana’s Resources

At the Moment of Truth series, Gyamfi accuses the NPP government of corruption and enriching a few at the nation's expense.

Amid escalating economic challenges and rising living costs in Ghana, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has launched a scathing critique against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. Speaking at the NDC’s “Moment of Truth” series in Accra on February 19, Gyamfi accused the government of exploiting the country’s resources for the benefit of a select few, leaving the majority of Ghanaians in hardship.

According to Gyamfi, the country’s rich natural assets are being sold off, and the proceeds are distributed among the families and friends of those in power. This nepotism, he claims, is a direct cause of the high standard of living and the difficulty ordinary Ghanaians face in affording basic necessities.

“My brothers and sisters, where did we go wrong? What crime have we committed to deserve this kind of treatment from our own leaders?” Gyamfi posed these questions to his audience, highlighting the dire situation faced by many in the nation. He pointed out the stark contrast between the hardworking nature of the Ghanaian people and the abuse of state resources by the NPP government, particularly at a time of economic bankruptcy, high unemployment rates, and unprecedented hardships.

According to a report by My Joy Online, Gyamfi didn’t stop at general accusations; he detailed specific schemes he alleges the government has used to siphon funds from the state. These include the controversial “Agyapa” deal, payments to Ai Skytrain Ltd for non-existent sky trains, and other scandals such as the PDS thievery and the Ameri Novation agreement, which he describes as relentless attempts by the government to “fleece the state coffers.”

“This government has earned the dubious distinction of being the most corrupt under the Fourth Republic,” Gyamfi stated, stressing the suffering inflicted on Ghanaians across all sectors due to the government’s actions. From students to professionals and market women, the widespread corruption under President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia’s administration has, according to Gyamfi, led to nationwide suffering.

As the NDC’s “Moment of Truth” series continues to shed light on what they claim are the failings of the current government, the call for accountability and a shift in governance grows louder among opposition ranks and the Ghanaian populace. The government has yet to respond to these latest allegations, leaving the nation to ponder the way forward amidst these troubling accusations.
