In a report by Ghana Web, Kennedy Agyapong, the prominent Member of Parliament for Assin Central, recently shed light on certain contentious actions of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
During a large-scale gathering in the heart of Kumasi on September 30, 2023, Agyapong, who has ambitions to lead the NPP in the upcoming presidential primaries, vocally critiqued Chairman Wontumi’s political maneuverings. Here’s a closer look at three of his most riveting revelations:
1. Media Manipulation against NPP Stalwarts
Agyapong expressed deep concern over Wontumi’s misuse of his media platforms. He pinpointed numerous instances where these platforms attacked esteemed party figures. Agyapong’s primary grievance revolved around the disrespectful portrayal of the recently-resigned trade minister, Alan Kverematen.
“Operating radio and TV stations to slander our senior party members is crossing a line,” Agyapong asserted, cautioning Wontumi to tread carefully.
2. Switching Allegiances
Digging into the political archives, Agyapong highlighted that Wontumi originally championed the cause of Alan Kyerematen. In a dramatic twist, it was Agyapong who influenced Wontumi to rally behind Nana Akufo-Addo, the party’s front-runner.
“I was the bridge that brought Wontumi into Akufo-Addo’s fold,” Agyapong announced to the throngs present. “Supporting Akufo-Addo or Vice President Bawumia is one’s prerogative, but doing so shouldn’t involve insults,” he emphasized.
3. Dominating the Party’s National Council
Agyapong voiced his disapproval of how Wontumi, in concert with chairmen from five regions, is steering the National Council of NPP. Their aggressive and dominating tactics have left many concerned about the party’s direction.
“Alan faces unwarranted criticism on Wontumi’s media platforms,” Agyapong bemoaned, adding, “These displays of unchecked power, especially in pivotal party meetings, undermine our party’s integrity.”
His message was crystal clear: “Challenge me if you dare. Let’s see who stands tall after November 4. We won’t let the NPP’s legacy, built since 1992, crumble because of newcomers unaware of the party’s origins.”
Kennedy Agyapong has thrown his hat into the ring, vying for the NPP’s leadership alongside three other formidable candidates: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Come November 4, 2023, the NPP will decide on their flagbearer, hoping to find the best successor to the incumbent, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
