  • Ghana’s ban on polystyrene foam products takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
  • The EPA ran an outreach campaign in five northern regions through Nov. 1.
  • Medical, scientific and laboratory uses are exempt from the ban.

Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority is stepping up public education ahead of a nationwide foam ban that takes effect Jan. 1, 2027, Environmental Protection reported.

The agency is urging manufacturers, importers, retailers and consumers to prepare for restrictions on polystyrene foam products, including the disposable takeaway packs widely used for food.

Foam ban outreach reaches the north

As part of its preparations, the authority ran an outreach campaign across five regions in northern Ghana from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1. The drive aimed to inform businesses, local authorities and consumers about the coming rules and encourage a shift to alternative packaging.

The authority first announced the ban in May, setting a transition period so businesses could adjust and find substitutes. The ban covers the production, importation, distribution, sale and use of affected products. However, specialized medical, scientific and laboratory uses are exempt.

Why Ghana is moving against foam

The goal is to cut plastic pollution and the environmental harm caused by foam waste, which can persist in the environment and add to litter in waterways and other ecosystems.

Polystyrene foam remains popular because it is lightweight, cheap and insulating. But it can break into small fragments that are hard to collect and remove.

So the authority wants businesses to start switching now rather than wait until enforcement begins. Meanwhile, the restrictions form part of Ghana’s wider push to improve waste management and curb pollution from single-use packaging.
