President Akufo-Addo Praises Major General Asmah on UN Role

First African woman UN Force Commander receives presidential congratulations

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lauded Major General Anita Asmah for her historic appointment as the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF). 

Major General Asmah is the first African woman to hold this prestigious position.

During a courtesy call at Jubilee House, Major General Asmah shared her new role with the President and sought his guidance. 

According to Graphic Online, President Akufo-Addo warmly congratulated her, emphasizing the significance of her achievement not only for Ghana but for Africa as a whole.

A milestone for women in leadership

President Akufo-Addo noted that 2024 has been a landmark year for Ghanaian women in leadership.

Alongside Major General Asmah’s groundbreaking appointment, he highlighted the election of Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botwe as the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

“This year has truly been remarkable for women in Ghana. Major General Asmah’s success showcases the strength and potential of our women leaders,” Akufo-Addo remarked.

The President expressed his belief that Major General Asmah’s achievement would inspire more young women in Ghana and across Africa to aspire to leadership roles in various fields.

High-level support and recognition

The meeting at Jubilee House was attended by key figures, including the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and National Security Adviser, Brigadier General Okyere (Rtd).

Both military and government officials expressed their pride in Major General Asmah’s accomplishment. 

Lieutenant General Oppong-Peprah praised her dedication to service and professionalism, qualities that have brought honor to Ghana on the global stage.

Major General Asmah’s appointment marks another step forward in Ghana’s contributions to international peacekeeping efforts. 

Her leadership in UNDOF reflects her commitment to excellence and her ability to navigate complex global challenges.
