As Ghana prepares for a leadership transition following the 2024 general elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for transparency, collaboration, and mutual respect. He emphasized that the transition process plays a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s democratic principles and ensuring a smooth transfer of power.

Speaking at the inauguration of the transition team at the Accra International Conference Centre, Akufo-Addo urged all stakeholders to prioritize national interest over political differences.

“It is imperative that we continue to consolidate this hard-earned reputation by adhering strictly to the provisions of the Transition Act. We send a powerful message to the world that democracy thrives in Ghana, even in challenging times,” he said.

According to Graphic Online, the transition team, which includes members from both the outgoing administration and the incoming government of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has been tasked with ensuring a seamless power transfer. Their role involves overseeing the continuation of critical national projects and preventing disruptions in government operations.

Ghana’s transition process guided by the Presidential Transition Act

Ghana’s transition process is guided by the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), which outlines the steps for a smooth handover of power. Section 1 of the Act mandates that the sitting President and the President-elect appoint representatives to the transition team within 24 hours of the official declaration of the presidential election results.

This provision ensures that the transition process starts immediately, regardless of any unresolved parliamentary disputes. By starting early, Ghana aims to avoid delays that could affect the continuation of government projects, the stability of public administration, and the welfare of its citizens.

The Presidential Transition Act is a crucial part of Ghana’s commitment to democracy, as it ensures that both incoming and outgoing administrations work together to maintain stability. The process is a model for other African nations striving for democratic excellence.

Transition team faces critical tasks before Mahama’s January 7 inauguration

As Ghana looks forward to the January 7 inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, the transition team will play a crucial role in ensuring stability and continuity. The team’s responsibilities include transferring power, facilitating briefings for incoming officials, and overseeing the proper handover of documents, assets, and resources.

President Akufo-Addo urged all team members to approach the task with unity, respect, and transparency. “I urge all members of the team, both from the outgoing administration and the incoming, to approach this task with a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect,” Akufo-Addo said.

The President’s call for collaboration reflects Ghana’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa. As the transition process unfolds, Ghana continues to demonstrate to the world that peaceful transfers of power are possible, even in a region where leadership changes are often marked by conflict and instability.
