Gold Fields Ghana Appeals $2M Tax Imposed on New Stadium

Gold Fields Ghana Seeks Tax Relief for Community Sports Investment

by Motoni Olodun

Gold Fields Ghana has appealed to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to reconsider a $2 million tax levied on its newly constructed T&A Sports Stadium in Tarkwa. The mining giant, which operates the Tarkwa and Damang gold mines in Ghana, completed the state-of-the-art sports facility earlier this year as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

According to Gold Fields Ghana, the tax, which was imposed on the stadium as part of property taxes, is seen as excessive and counterproductive, given the company’s significant investment in the community. The stadium was built to promote sports development and provide a modern facility for local teams and residents, aligning with the company’s commitment to social impact.

Joshua Mortoti, Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields West Africa, stated that the company is engaging with the GRA to find an amicable solution. “We are hopeful that the GRA will see the value of this investment in the community and reconsider the tax burden on this facility,” Mortoti said in a recent interview.

The T&A Sports Stadium, a $16 million project, was officially opened in March 2024. It has been hailed as one of the best sports facilities in the region, with a seating capacity of 10,000, modern amenities, and a FIFA-standard pitch. The stadium is expected to host local and regional sports events, boosting sports tourism and economic activities in Tarkwa.

Gold Fields Ghana’s appeal comes at a time when the company is also advocating for broader tax reforms to encourage investments in community infrastructure. The mining sector is a critical part of Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to government revenue and foreign exchange. Companies like Gold Fields play a crucial role in local development through taxes, royalties, and social projects.

However, the imposition of the $2 million tax has sparked debate among stakeholders about the balance between government revenue generation and incentivizing corporate investment in public goods. Some industry experts argue that high taxes on community projects could deter companies from investing in social infrastructure, which is vital for local development.

In response to the appeal, the GRA has stated that it will review the matter but emphasized the importance of tax compliance for all entities operating in Ghana. The authority noted that while it encourages corporate social responsibility, it must also ensure that taxes are collected fairly and transparently to support national development.

Local residents and community leaders have expressed support for Gold Fields Ghana’s appeal, highlighting the positive impact of the stadium on the community. “The T&A Sports Stadium has transformed sports in Tarkwa and provided a much-needed boost to our local economy. We hope the government will consider the benefits this facility brings to our people,” said Nana Kobina Angu II, a community leader in Tarkwa.

The debate over the tax on the T&A Sports Stadium also reflects broader discussions about the role of the private sector in public infrastructure development. As companies increasingly invest in community projects, there is a growing need for clear policies that balance tax obligations with incentives for corporate social responsibility.

Gold Fields Ghana remains optimistic that a favorable resolution will be reached with the GRA. The company has reiterated its commitment to working with the government to support community development and ensure sustainable growth in the mining sector.

The outcome of this appeal could set a precedent for how community investments by private companies are treated under Ghanaian tax law. As discussions continue, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the GRA balances revenue collection with the need to foster private sector contributions to public infrastructure.

Gold Fields Ghana’s efforts to engage with the GRA demonstrate its dedication to its host communities and its willingness to find mutually beneficial solutions. Regardless of the outcome, the company’s investment in the T&A Sports Stadium stands as a testament to its commitment to social impact and community development in Ghana.
