The National Democratic Congress (NDC) believes the Bawumia-Matthew Opoku Prempeh ticket will aid its victory in the December 7 polls. NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah expressed confidence, viewing Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s selection as advantageous due to his perceived arrogance and disrespect.
Speaking on CTV’s morning show, Nketiah likened the NPP’s choice to playing against a team with an injured goalkeeper. “Everyone knows NAPO is arrogant and disrespectful,” he said. He referred to the advice given to Prempeh by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to prove critics wrong about his arrogance. However, Nketiah claimed that Prempeh disregarded this advice soon after leaving Manhyia Palace.
Nketiah criticized Prempeh’s behavior, noting his arrogance as a disadvantage for the NPP. “NAPO’s perceived arrogance and disrespectfulness will work against the NPP,” he asserted. Nketiah also dismissed the NPP’s strategy of leveraging Prempeh’s royal lineage as a campaign tool. He argued that the NDC values equality under the constitution and does not prioritize royal heritage in selecting leaders.
Nketiah emphasized that the NDC does not care about a candidate’s royal heritage as long as they meet constitutional requirements. “NAPO’s supporters are wrong to pitch his campaign on his royal lineage,” he stated. Nketiah pointed out that in the Akan tradition, inheritance is matrilineal, meaning NAPO is not considered a true royal despite his grandfather being an Asantehene.
The NDC prioritizes equality and constitutional adherence over regional or royal background. Nketiah reiterated, “We believe in equality under the constitution, so we don’t care what region our president or running mate comes from.” He criticized the NPP for emphasizing Prempeh’s royal heritage in their campaign, asserting that it does not align with the NDC’s principles.
Asiedu Nketiah’s comments reflect the NDC’s strategy and confidence in the upcoming elections. By focusing on equality and criticizing the NPP’s reliance on royal lineage, the NDC aims to appeal to voters who prioritize constitutional values. The Bawumia-NAPO ticket, according to Nketiah, presents an opportunity for the NDC to secure victory in December.
