In a decisive move, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate for its 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The announcement came after an emergency meeting of the party’s National Council at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
Unanimous Approval
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, revealed the unanimous decision following extensive consultations within the party. Dr. Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, had been in discussions with key stakeholders, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, before formally nominating Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
As per Article 12 (b) of the NPP constitution, the flagbearer nominates the vice-presidential candidate in consultation with the National Council. Although the constitution expected the nomination to be made in December 2023, Dr. Bawumia requested additional time for consultations. This extension was granted by the party, leading to the final decision in July 2024.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, brings a diverse background to the ticket. Born on May 23, 1968, he is a dentist by training and has a robust educational background. He attended Prempeh College in Kumasi, where he obtained his O-Level and A-Level certificates. He furthered his education with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology in 1991, an M.Sc. in Clinical Epidemiology in 1994, an MB.ChB in Medicine in 1998, and an MRCS in Surgery in 2002.
In addition to his medical qualifications, Dr. Opoku Prempeh holds an Executive Certificate in Public Leadership, acquired in 2016. Also, he is currently serving as a Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in Kumasi and is part of the Defence and Interior Committee and the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
Strategic Choice for 2024
Dr. Bawumia’s choice of Dr. Opoku Prempeh as his running mate is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the NPP’s chances in the upcoming elections. However, Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s blend of medical expertise, political experience, and educational background is expected to resonate well with a broad spectrum of voters.
The NPP is gearing up for a robust campaign, leveraging the combined strengths of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh. As the political landscape heats up, the NPP aims to present a united front to retain power and continue its developmental agenda for Ghana.
Moreover, with this significant announcement, the NPP is poised for a competitive race in the 2024 presidential elections. The focus now shifts to campaign strategies and voter engagement as the party rallies behind its new vice-presidential candidate.
