NPP Unveils NAPO as Vice Presidential Candidate in Ghana

Movement for Change Returns to Strengthen NPP

by Adenike Adeodun

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for a significant event as Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, is set to be unveiled as the vice presidential candidate. This move is expected to cause an unprecedented shift, with members of the Movement for Change returning to the party.

Alhaji Abubakar Alhasan, the Constituency Organizer for Manhyia South, announced the unveiling. The event will take place on Tuesday, July 10, 2024, at Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region. Alhasan claims the Movement for Change, a breakaway faction, will collapse after the National Council endorses NAPO.

“In the next 32 hours, when the National Council endorses the candidate, the Movement for Change will implode,” Alhasan stated. “The only persons who will remain with Allan Kyerematen will be his confidants.”

Many members of the Movement for Change have expressed their excitement about NAPO’s selection. They are willing to return to the NPP, bolstering the party’s strength.

Before the grand event, NAPO will be presented to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his blessing. He will then parade through Kumasi’s principal streets before arriving at Jubilee Park.

Alhasan dismissed rumors that President Akufo-Addo had reservations about NAPO’s selection. “The president commended Dr. Bawumia for presenting the very name he was waiting for,” he said. “The name was packaged in a special luxurious envelope from Dubai and presented to the president.”

Sources from the National Council indicate that the NPP’s Manhyia parliamentary candidacy will be declared vacant after the council’s meeting on Thursday. This move will allow interested individuals to contest the position.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially submitted NAPO’s name as his preferred running mate for the December 2024 presidential election. The submission followed a crucial meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House.

Several names were considered for the running mate position, but NAPO, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, emerged as the top choice. This decision raises the stakes for both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NPP aims to secure a third term, while the NDC seeks to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh will face off against Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of opposition flagbearer John Mahama. Both candidates have served as education ministers, making their records in the education sector a focal point of the campaign.

The anticipation surrounding NAPO’s unveiling is palpable. His selection is seen as a strategic move by the NPP to strengthen its position and appeal to a broader electorate. The event at Jubilee Park is expected to be a significant moment in Ghana’s political landscape.

As the NPP prepares for the December election, the unveiling of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh marks a critical step in their campaign strategy. With the potential return of the Movement for Change members, the party is poised to consolidate its support base and present a united front.

The upcoming election will be a crucial test for both the NPP and the NDC. The candidates’ records, especially in education, will be scrutinized by voters. The outcome will shape Ghana’s political future and determine the direction of the country’s development.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s unveiling at Jubilee Park will not only be a political spectacle but also a defining moment for the NPP. As the party looks to secure another term, the support and momentum generated by NAPO’s selection will be instrumental in their campaign.

Ghana’s political scene is set for an exciting and competitive election season. With key players like Dr. Opoku Prempeh and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in the race, the stakes are higher than ever. The decisions made in the coming months will have lasting impacts on the nation.
