Civil Society to Challenge NAPO Candidacy, NPP Prepares for Elections

NDC Urged to Focus on Campaign, Leave NAPO to ASEPA

by Adenike Adeodun

The Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, has urged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to worry about Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the Minister for Energy, being named as the running mate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking during a panel discussion on ChannelOne TV, Thompson assured the NDC that civil society organizations in the country will handle NAPO’s candidacy if he is announced as the vice-presidential candidate. Thompson stated, “We will finish him in 48 hours.” He emphasized that his team is compiling statements and actions of NAPO to end his candidacy swiftly.

Thompson reminded viewers of NAPO’s controversial tenure as both Education and Energy Minister, suggesting that his past actions will be sufficient to undermine his candidacy. He urged the NDC to focus on their campaign and leave the scrutiny of NAPO to civil society organizations.

Thompson advised the NDC against engaging NAPO directly. He stated, “Do not waste your time on Matthew Opoku Prempeh. Leave him for us. Focus on your campaign and messages.” He stressed that Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, should not respond to NAPO’s statements. “Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is on a pedestal, NAPO is in the gutters. Let somebody else respond to him,” he added.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, has officially submitted the name of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his preferred running mate for the 2024 elections. According to Joy News, Bawumia presented NAPO to the National Executives of the party at their headquarters in Accra.

Bawumia also informed the Majority Caucus of Parliament about his decision to select NAPO as the vice-presidential candidate. The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed that the Vice President has officially nominated NAPO. The National Executive Council is expected to meet on Thursday, July 4, to confirm or otherwise approve NAPO’s nomination.

Thompson’s comments reflect the strategic positioning of civil society groups in influencing political dynamics. By focusing on NAPO’s track record, ASEPA aims to sway public opinion and challenge the NPP’s decision. This move also underscores the proactive role of civil society organizations in Ghana’s political landscape.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s campaign strategy will likely hinge on highlighting their policy differences and promoting their candidates’ credentials. Thompson’s advice to keep Prof. Opoku-Agyemang above the fray suggests a focus on positive campaigning and direct engagement with voters.

As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2024 elections, the role of civil society organizations in shaping narratives and scrutinizing candidates will be critical. The NPP’s decision to nominate NAPO and the subsequent reactions from opposition and civil society groups will play a significant role in the electoral process. With both parties gearing up for intense campaigns, the coming months will be crucial in determining Ghana’s political future.
