The opposition party in Ghana accuses the vice president of using propaganda and lies to win votes in the upcoming elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched a scathing attack on the vice president of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of having a credibility crisis and using subterfuge and propaganda to hoodwink Ghanaians.

The NDC’s General Secretary, Mr. Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, said at a press conference on Monday that Dr. Bawumia has failed to deliver on his promises and has distanced himself from the failures of his government.

He said Dr. Bawumia, who is the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections, has been struggling to accept responsibility for his actions and inactions after he allegedly failed to ameliorate the plights of Ghanaians as he promised in 2016 and 2020.

Mr. Kwetey urged Ghanaians to be more critical of the vice president and hold him accountable for the numerous promises he made in both elections.

He said Dr. Bawumia has refused to tout the achievements of his government because they have performed abysmally with unfulfilled promises which have caused him to run from his shadows.

Broken promises

According to Mr. Kwetey, the NPP inherited a robust economy in 2017 following pragmatic initiatives implemented by the John Mahama administration, which enabled the economy to grow at a predicted 7% in 2017.

He said former president Mahama had access to revenue from only one oil field but handed over revenue from three oil fields to the NPP because he added two more fields before he left office.

“This is what experience and vision do and this is the experience Mahama is bringing to address the challenges Ghana is facing,” he added.

He said the NPP, on the other hand, has mismanaged the economy and imposed harsh taxes on Ghanaians, such as the E-Levy, port charges, and betting tax.

Mr. Kwetey said the NPP has also failed to fight corruption, create jobs, and improve the living standards of the people.

He said the current state of the Ghanaian economy and its attendant hardship on Ghanaians meant that Ghanaians must be bold to reject any form of lies and vile propaganda going into the next general elections.

Mahama’s vision

Mr. Kwetey said Mr. Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the NDC for the 2024 elections, has outlined policies and highly achievable initiatives that are not based on subterfuge and propaganda.

He said Mr. Mahama has promised to scrap all draconian taxes that have been imposed by the NPP government and increase the government’s share of profit and revenue from natural resources to fund development and reduce tax burdens.

He said Mr. Mahama also intends to adopt a comprehensive approach to fight corruption at all levels abolish the payment of ex-gratia to members of the executive under Article 71 and persuade other arms of government to accept the same.

Mr. Kwetey also stated that Mr. Mahama have proven himself as a trustworthy and visionary leader who can fix the mess created by the NPP and take Ghana to the next level of progress and prosperity.

He appealed to Ghanaians to vote for Mr. Mahama and the NDC in the 2024 elections to restore hope and dignity to the nation.
