Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed that the country’s expenditure during the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Abidjan amounted to approximately $3 million. During a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Ussif disclosed that the Ministry had initially budgeted around $8.5 million for the tournament. However, only $5 million was released by the Finance Ministry to cover various expenses related to Ghana’s participation.

Of the $5 million allocated, approximately $3,070,067.81 was utilized for expenses such as per diems, flight arrangements, medical costs, equipment, logistics, and hospitality during the initial phase of the tournament. This expenditure resulted in a surplus of $2,001,772.55 after Ghana’s exit from the competition.

Furthermore, the Sports Ministry managed to secure an additional $400,000 from MTN Ghana, significantly contributing to the government’s overall expenditure for the tournament. Addressing speculation about player payments before a crucial game, Ussif clarified that no such disbursements were made as Ghana did not advance to the next stage of the tournament. This decision was part of the Ministry’s strategy to ensure prudent resource management.

Ussif emphasized that the Ministry had agreed to pay bonuses only if the team progressed further in the competition. Consequently, no qualification bonuses were disbursed due to Ghana’s exit from the group stage. This approach aimed to motivate the team while also ensuring responsible financial management.

Ghana’s participation in the AFCON concluded at the group stage following a 2-2 draw against Mozambique in their final group match. Despite the team’s exit, the Ministry remains committed to supporting sports development and implementing prudent financial management practices in future endeavors. Ussif reiterated the government’s dedication to investing in sports and providing adequate resources for the development of athletes across the country.

The Minister’s transparency regarding the expenditure during AFCON reflects the government’s commitment to accountability and fiscal responsibility in managing public funds. With proper oversight and allocation of resources, Ghana aims to continue its progress in sports and achieve success in future tournaments.
