Twum-Barima-Adu Announces Independent Presidential Run in Ghana

Aspiring Candidate Aims to End NPP and NDC Dominance in 2024 Election

by Adenike Adeodun

George Twum-Barima-Adu, an aspiring independent candidate, has boldly launched his campaign for Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, aiming to disrupt the long-standing dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His campaign, under the slogan “breaking the 2” and the motto “yee gye aye no yie” – translating to “we are taking over governance to make it work for “all”—marks a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape.

Addressing a gathering at the Osu Presbyterian Church Hall in Accra on January 29, 2024, Twum-Barima-Adu articulated his mission to transform governance in Ghana. He criticized the NPP and NDC for failing to fulfill their promises to the Ghanaian people over the past 32 years, highlighting the need for a new direction in national leadership.

According to a report by Graphic Online, Twum-Barima-Adu’s campaign revolves around breaking the entrenched political duopoly of the NPP and NDC. He accused both parties of serving only their interests and supporters, neglecting the broader needs of the nation. His candidature represents a call for change, seeking to move beyond the two-party system that has dominated Ghana’s political scene since the inception of the Fourth Republic.

In his policy proposals, Twum-Barima-Adu outlined a bold vision for Ghana’s future. Key among his initiatives are the sale of non-profitable state enterprises, a thorough review of public procurement and contracts to ensure value for money and a significant downsizing of government. He plans to operate with a constitutionally approved cabinet of 19 ministers and a total ministerial count of 63, signaling a commitment to cutting unnecessary public expenditure.

Addressing the pressing issue of illegal mining (galamsey), Twum-Barima-Adu pledged to enforce existing laws while also introducing new legislation to close loopholes. His approach includes providing alternative livelihoods, such as carbon credit harvesting and the legal hemp industry, and offering new opportunities for the youth engaged in galamsey and other Ghanaians interested in these sectors.

Twum-Barima-Adu’s campaign is not just about challenging the status quo but also about offering tangible solutions to some of Ghana’s most pressing challenges. His focus on economic reform, governmental efficiency, and environmental sustainability reflects a comprehensive strategy designed to propel Ghana towards a more prosperous and equitable future.

As Ghana gears up for the 2024 presidential election, Twum-Barima-Adu’s independent bid introduces a new dynamic into the race. His commitment to breaking the two-party dominance and addressing key national issues sets the stage for a potentially transformative election, offering the Ghanaian electorate a fresh alternative to the traditional political powers.
