The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed Alexander Afenyo-Markin as its parliamentary candidate for Effutu in the upcoming general election. The incumbent MP was acclaimed by the party delegates at a conference held on January 27.
Afenyo-Markin, who has been representing the constituency since 2013, thanked the delegates for their support and urged them to work hard to secure victory for the NPP. He also recounted his political journey, which started as an assembly member and a presiding member of the district assembly.
He said the NPP had delivered on its promises to the people of Effutu and Ghana, citing the free senior high school, the school feeding, and the health insurance programmes as some of the achievements of the government. Furthermore, Afenyo-Markin appealed to the party members to improve their communication and outreach strategies to win more votes in the election.
A Leader with a Vision
The Central Regional Communication Director of the NPP, Isaac Mensah, who led a delegation to the conference, praised Afenyo-Markin for his leadership and accomplishments in the constituency. He said the MP had transformed Effutu into a place of choice and the gateway to the Central Region.
He also commended him for his contributions to the development of education, health, infrastructure, security and youth empowerment in the area. Isaac Mensah said Afenyo-Markin had a vision to make Effutu a model constituency in Ghana.
A Challenge from the Opposition
The NPP will face a stiff challenge from the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has also nominated its candidate for the Effutu seat. The NDC candidate is James Kofi Annan, a former banker and philanthropist.
Annan, who is the founder and president of Challenging Heights, a non-governmental organization that rescues and rehabilitates children from slavery and exploitation, has vowed to unseat Afenyo-Markin and bring change to Effutu. He has accused the MP of being corrupt and incompetent and has promised to deliver better services and opportunities to the people.
The Effutu constituency, which covers the Winneba municipality and its environs, has been a stronghold of the NPP since 2000. The NPP won the seat in the last election with 51.9% of the votes, while the NDC came second with 46.6%. The election is expected to be keenly contested, as both parties have intensified their campaigns and mobilization efforts.
As Ghana prepares to go to the polls on December 7, the people of Effutu have a crucial decision to make. They have to choose between two candidates who claim to have their best interests at heart. They have to weigh the track record of the incumbent MP and the vision of the challenger.
Whatever the outcome, the people of Effutu hope that their elected representative will work hard to improve their living standards, address their challenges and protect their rights. They hope that their future will be bright and prosperous.
