PwC Ghana joined forces with the non-profit United Way Ghana to organise a reading clinic and coaching sessions for students at Accra’s Aplaku M/A Cluster of Schools to commemorate International Literacy Day.
The collaborative effort witnessed PwC Ghana volunteers leading small group reading and coaching sessions spanning over three hours. Additionally, the firm donated a selection of age-suitable storybooks, flashcards, and other pertinent reading resources.
This initiative marks the second collaboration between PwC Ghana and United Way Ghana to enhance the school’s reading and learning environment.
Jennifer Achaa Osei, Assistant Manager and part of PwC’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) team shared with Daily Graphic that a previous book donation in June, facilitated through United Way Ghana, fell short due to the large student population. While the CRS team funded a portion of this recent project, PwC staff generously contributed additional books and funds.
According to a report by Graphic Online, PwC’s global commitment to societal impact drives their diverse range of projects. “Based on our global CRS initiatives, we identify local projects of significance,” Osei noted, highlighting past endeavours, including menstrual hygiene, women’s empowerment, and literacy drives.
Collaboration is at the heart of their efforts. “With key partnerships, like with United Way Ghana, we can effectively address specific needs, such as enhancing literacy in under-resourced schools,” said Osei. PwC staff volunteers also share their personal academic and career paths, aiming to motivate students towards future leadership roles.
United Way Ghana’s Impact and Operations Lead, Faustina Abbey, thanked PwC Ghana for their unwavering support, emphasising the pivotal role of education in community development. Aplaku M/A 1 Basic School’s Headteacher, Madam Issaka Hawa, also expressed gratitude for the joint endeavor.
