Dr. Bombande Hails Dampare as the Finest IGP in History

by Ikeoluwa Juliana Ogungbangbe

A recent commentary on Ghana’s current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has generated waves in security circles and beyond. Contrary to a senior police officer’s critical remarks, Security Expert and Senior UN Mediation Advisor, Dr. Emmanuel Bombande, has hailed Dr. Dampare as potentially the finest IGP in the nation’s history.

In a televised segment on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, September 12, Dr. Bombande responded to the controversy surrounding a leaked tape that allegedly revealed plans to oust Dr. Dampare from his office. During a parliamentary committee hearing regarding the tape, COP George Alex Mensah, the Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, was outspoken in his critique, labeling Dr. Dampare as the least effective IGP he had encountered throughout his extensive career.

In contrast to this viewpoint, Dr. Bombande praised Dr. Dampare for his decision to face the committee directly. He emphasised Dr. Dampare’s dedication to transparency, viewing his appearance as a testament to the IGP’s commitment to democratic ideals and public accountability.

Dr. Bombande underscored his support by stating, “We must acknowledge the weight of claims suggesting this IGP is the most ineffective. I firmly believe he will be remembered as the best we’ve ever had. His willingness to appear before the committee signifies a progressive step toward a police force that actively embraces accountability.”

He further contextualized the IGP’s appearance, arguing that the broader backdrop of political fanaticism should be recognized. According to Dr. Bombande, the current allegations are symptomatic of deeper issues within the Ghana Police Service, rooted in divisive politics and internal discord.

Dr. Bombande insisted that Dr. Dampare’s testimony wasn’t just about refuting the claims but served a dual purpose of mending the Police Service’s tarnished reputation. “His presence at the committee was pivotal, not merely to address the claims but to help repair the Service’s image, which has suffered due to internal strife and conspiracy,” he remarked.

Background on Dr. Dampare

His academic accolades are noteworthy. He boasts a Ph.D. in Finance and Management from King’s College, London, and holds two Masters of Science degrees from prominent UK institutions. His professional development also includes leadership training from globally recognized institutions such as the University of Cambridge, UK, and the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
