President John Dramani Mahama visits Volta Region to assess the damage caused by recent tidal waves that have left hundreds of residents homeless.

His visit followed Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations on March 6, during which he emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges.

Leaving directly from the national event, Mahama is expected to meet with displaced residents, inspect the destruction, and coordinate emergency relief efforts.

The tidal waves hit several coastal communities, including Keta, Anloga, and Dzita, washing away homes, farmlands, and fishing boats.  According to Graphic Online, residents have been calling for urgent government intervention to support recovery efforts.

Government pledges long-term solutions for coastal erosion

Minister for Government Communication Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed Mahama’s visit in a statement on social media, highlighting that the President wants to see the extent of the devastation firsthand.

Earlier in the day, during his Independence Day address, Mahama spoke about the increasing risks posed by climate change, particularly in coastal areas prone to erosion and flooding.

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to long-term solutions, including the expansion of sea defense projects and improvements to disaster response systems to protect vulnerable communities from future disasters.

Environmental experts have warned that without immediate intervention, coastal erosion will continue to threaten lives and livelihoods. Mahama visits Volta Region in a crucial move to reinforce the government’s efforts to combat climate-related disasters.

Residents call for immediate relief and infrastructure improvements

As Mahama met with community members, many expressed their frustration over the slow response to their plight. Families who lost their homes and businesses pleaded for urgent relief, including shelter, food, and financial assistance to rebuild.

Local leaders have also called for more sustainable infrastructure to mitigate future disasters. They argue that while short-term relief is necessary, the government must invest in long-term solutions such as reinforced coastal barriers and improved drainage systems.

Mahama assured residents that the government is committed to supporting them, stating that relief efforts will be intensified in the coming days. The President’s visit has renewed hope among those affected, though many are eager to see action beyond promises.
