Sylvester Adinam Mensah has been named Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) by President John Dramani Mahama, taking on the vital mandate to spearhead the bank’s strategic growth and transformation.

In his new role, Mensah will lead GEXIM in its mission to facilitate the development of an export-driven economy, aligning with the Ghana Export-Import Bank Act 2016 (Act 991). 

According to Ghanaweb, the Bank is tasked with fostering trade between Ghana and other nations, encouraging overseas investments by Ghanaian businesses, and addressing critical market inefficiencies to bolster Ghana’s competitiveness in the global market.

Mensah, an accomplished finance professional and seasoned strategist, brings decades of experience in public-sector banking, fund management, and governance. As a Fellow of the Institute of Business Consulting (UK) and a Certified Strategy Professional, his expertise in strategic financial management and operational efficiency positions him as the ideal leader for GEXIM’s ambitious objectives.

Proven leadership in in finance and public administration

Prior to his appointment, Mensah demonstrated a strong record of success in both the private and public sectors. As Head of Public Sector Banking at Intercontinental Bank (Ghana) Ltd, he developed credit risk frameworks and provided strategic investment and advisory services to government clients.

In public service, Mensah served as a Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon Constituency and later as Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). Under his stewardship, the NHIA fund was effectively managed and reformed, introducing efficiency-enhancing policies that expanded Ghana’s health insurance scheme.

Mensah’s academic contributions are equally noteworthy. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Nobel International Business School, where he teaches Corporate Strategy and Strategic Management.

A vision for GEXIM’s growth

With GEXIM’s mandate rooted in transforming Ghana’s economy into an export-led powerhouse, Mensah’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment. His extensive experience in strategy execution and financial management will be critical in driving the bank’s efforts to support export-oriented businesses and stimulate foreign investment.

Mensah holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Ghana Business School and an MBA in Finance from the University of Leicester, UK. He has also earned several diplomas and certificates from leading international institutions, further solidifying his credentials as a financial strategist.

As GEXIM embarks on its next phase of growth, Mensah’s leadership is expected to position the bank as a catalyst for Ghana’s economic transformation, reinforcing its role in the global trade arena.
