Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor has endorsed the ambitious railway development vision outlined by Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The plan aims to significantly expand Ghana’s railway infrastructure, focusing on a major rail line connecting Tema to the country’s northern regions, which would extend further to the Western Region.
Support for modern rail infrastructure
Dr. Bawumia shared his railway vision last week during a campaign in the Ashanti Region, underscoring the benefits of enhanced connectivity from Tema through Boankra to Ghana’s northern territories.
Former President Kufuor, in an interview with Asempa FM, commended the plan, describing it as crucial for national development.
“I recently listened to his plans to prioritize railway expansion,” Kufuor said. “By connecting Tema through Boankra to the north, Dr. Bawumia envisions a transformative project that will leverage Ghana’s mineral deposits and facilitate economic growth.”
Kufuor highlighted the strategic importance of this railway infrastructure for opening up the country, especially for tapping into iron reserves in the northern regions.
He emphasized that the project’s ambitious scope represents a forward-thinking approach essential for Ghana’s progress.
Driving economic growth through transport links
In addition to praising the railway project, Kufuor acknowledged Dr. Bawumia’s broader policy initiatives, noting his understanding of governance in a modern context as a valuable asset.
“Dr. Bawumia is well-prepared for leadership,” Kufuor stated. “He has shown a comprehensive grasp of the key issues, including global trends in technology and digitalization, that can propel Ghana forward.”
According to Graphic Online, Kufuor expressed optimism that the railway expansion would stimulate economic growth by improving transportation efficiency and industrial potential across the regions.
He pointed out that such a project could enhance access to resources, foster trade, and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global market.
An agenda for national transformation
This follows endorsement from the former president as the support of Dr. Bawumia’s vision continues to gather momentum and the railway project has been viewed as central to the development agenda of Ghana.
The performed estimates of the project’s effects indicate that the advantages of the project are to be observed not only in transportation but in job creation and industrial chances, especially in the northern and western regions.
