KEY POINTS

  • A presidential candidate condemned business mogul Cheddar’s apology to colonial powers.
  • The candidate argued that such apologies undermine the country’s independence and sovereignty.
  • The comments sparked a broader debate about colonialism, independence, and leadership in Ghana.

A Ghanaian presidential candidate has come hard on Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, after the business mogul tendered an apology to the former colonial masters of Ghana. The candidate was very much against it and stated that such apologies are a regression to the country’s independence and reduces the sovereignty of Ghana.

This controversy emerged after Cheddar in his statement said that he wanted to apologize to the colonial masters of Ghana for the poor management of the country after gaining independence.

The comments that most people considered as provocative were intended to discuss the nation’s problems after independence. But they have elicited a lot of criticism from politicians and the public at large.

Political consequences of cheddar’s statements

The unnamed presidential candidate did not take long to respond to the issue, saying that Cheddar’s apology erases the efforts of those who struggled for the liberation of Ghana. As per the candidate, Ghanaians should celebrate the independence of the country rather than apologizing to the colonial masters.

The candidate said that Cheddar’s apology was a betrayal of Ghana’s history and an insult to the nation’s accomplishments since it gained independence in 1957.

The apology has brought a discussion on leadership and accountability before the 2024 elections. Most people feel that Cheddar has a case of responsibility in leadership in articulating the current problems that need to be solved or prevented in the country, instead of looking for problems in an earlier American period.

GhanaWeb also quoted the candidate as saying that Cheddar’s words show that the ruling elite is out of touch with the masses, as many Ghanaians still struggle with the economy and social justice. Regarding apologies, the candidate argues that Cheddar is shifting the attention of the public from the main problems that the country faces.

It has created a discourse on leadership and accountability – especially during the run-up to the 2024 polls. Some people suggest that what Cheddar said is a bigger problem of accountability that our political and business leaders fail to solve the problems this nation has today while they are still dwelling in the history of the colonized America instead of moving forward.

Hope for a brighter future

Then, finally and to this day the presidential candidate summed up with a positive message that the future belongs to a stronger Ghana and it is not in the apologetic mode.

The candidate urged his party to refocus on the issues of economic growth, employment opportunities and the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian. In his speech, the candidate said that the country should be prepared for the 2024 elections, and only unity, not division, will help Ghana to become better and more stable.
