Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has called upon Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to adopt a more robust stance against corruption, emphasizing its pivotal role in driving the country’s economic progress. During an appearance on The Probe, Azure stressed that the government’s commitment to combating corruption could have a profound impact on tax reductions and overall national development.
He emphasized the importance of fulfilling the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) pledge to tackle corruption instead of imposing burdensome taxes on citizens. Azure pointed out that addressing corruption, especially in areas like dubious contracts, could lead to significant savings that could be redirected to more productive sectors of the economy. Azure highlighted the need for proactive measures to address corruption across various sectors, citing examples such as Estonia’s efficient business registration process, which could serve as a model for Ghana.
He expressed his expectations for Dr. Bawumia to articulate a clear strategy for addressing corruption issues inherited from previous administrations and ensuring accountability in government contracts. The call for a stronger stance against corruption comes in the wake of Vice President Bawumia’s address on “Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership and Bold Solutions for the Future” at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.
In his speech, Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for the country, including plans to abolish the E-Levy and eliminate VAT on electricity, emissions tax, and betting tax, among other policies aimed at fostering economic growth. However, Dr. Bawumia’s analogy likening his role as Vice President to that of a driver’s mate has drawn criticism, with some suggesting he could have exerted more influence as the chairman of the Economic Management Team.
Azure defended the Vice President’s analogy, stating that it’s not uncommon for politicians seeking higher office to distance themselves from the failures of their current administration. While acknowledging the government’s achievements, Azure urged Dr. Bawumia to acknowledge any shortcomings and outline concrete steps to address them, particularly in combating corruption.
As Ghana prepares for the upcoming general elections, Azure’s call for stronger action against corruption stresses the growing demand for accountability and transparency in governance.
