Scripture Union Ghana, a Christian organization that aims to promote a better Christian life among people of all age groups, has launched a $7.4 million campsite project at Pepawani near Aburi in the Eastern Region.
The project, dubbed the “Children and Youth Development Campsite,” will be a multi-purpose facility that will provide accommodation, training, and spiritual guidance for members of the union and other interested groups.
The project, which is expected to be completed in five years, will cover 14.2 acres of land and will include a 1000-seater main auditorium, a 1000-seater multi-purpose hall, dormitories, 13 chalets, an administration block, sports fields, a prayer garden, and a gatehouse with parking.
The project was unveiled at a community durbar at Pepawani on Saturday, December 25, 2023, where the sod was cut by the Council Chairman of Scripture Union Ghana, Reverend Morgan Fianko Asiedu.
Rev Asiedu said the project was necessitated by the difficulty and high cost of relying on public school facilities and private commercial facilities for hosting the union’s children and youth camps.
He said the campsite would help the union to fulfill its mission of impacting the lives of more young people through biblical teachings and practical skills development.
He added that the campsite would also serve as a source of income for the union, as it would be available for rent by churches and other organizations for their activities.
Rev Asiedu said the first phase of the project, which involved the construction of the main auditorium and other facilities, would commence in June 2024 and would cost $4.9 million.
He appealed to the public, especially members and alumni of the union, to support the project financially and prayerfully.
The General Director of Scripture Union Ghana, Reverend Derrick Koomson, said the project was a testimony of how God was using the union to reach the rest of the world.
He said the project was an opportunity for the union and the Pepawani community to strike a bond of friendship and mutual benefit.
He assured the community that the union would not only construct a building but also train the young ones in the way of Christ so that they would grow to become responsible leaders for society and the country.
He also thanked the chiefs and people of Pepawani for donating the land for the project and expressed the hope that the project would bring development and transformation to the area.
The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church, Ghana, The Most Rev Paul Kwabena Boafo, who was the guest of honor, commended the union for the project and described it as an “intentional investment in the young and the youth.”
He said the project would help nurture and mold the character and values of the young people who would use the facility.
He urged the union to ensure that the project was completed on time and maintained well.
He also pledged the support of the Methodist Church for the project and prayed for God’s blessing and favor upon it.
The Kyidomhene of Pepawani, Nana Kwafo Kwasi Wiafe, thanked the union for choosing the community for the project and expressed the hope that it would bring positive changes to the lives of the people.
He also appealed to the union to employ some of the youth in the community during the construction and operation of the facility.
He assured the union of the community’s cooperation and protection of the project.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Seth Kwame Acheampong, who was represented by the Municipal Chief Executive of Akwapim South, Mr Frank Aidoo, lauded the union for the project and said it was in line with the government’s agenda of youth development.
He said the project would create jobs and boost the local economy of the area.
He also urged the union to use the facility to promote peace and harmony in the country, especially as the nation prepares for the 2024 general elections.
Scripture Union Ghana is an evangelical Christian organization that started as a school and Bible study movement in the early 1950s.
It has since grown beyond the boundaries of traditional evangelicalism into a hybrid of an evangelical-charismatic movement.
