BUA Strikes Back: Standing Firm in Dangote Dispute

by Oluwatosin Racheal Alabi

BUA Group has firmly countered Aliko Dangote’s accusations, asserting its steadfast commitment and detailing its history of persistence over ploys. The company rejects Dangote’s assertions as baseless efforts to tarnish BUA’s reputation and hinder its business processes.

In its assertion of facts, BUA recalls its 1991 inception as a pivotal moment during a period of sugar shortages in Nigeria. The company details a controversial incident with Dangote involving a sugar payment that devolved into a legal confrontation, resulting in a freeze on BUA’s assets. Undeterred, the company overcame this obstacle and emerged stronger.

BUA’s statement highlights its entry into sugar refining, a journey marred by challenges, such as land revocation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, allegedly influenced by Dangote. BUA attributes its rebound to its chairman’s late father, who donated land to establish the successful Lagos Sugar Refinery.

The company also outlines its innovative venture into the cement sector, where it met resistance believed to be orchestrated by Dangote. Despite administrative pressure and operational disruptions, BUA acknowledges former President Umaru Yar’Adua’s pivotal role in ensuring its active engagement in Nigeria’s economic development.

BUA reflects on the establishment of the Edo Cement Plant, highlighting former President Muhammadu Buhari’s crucial support in protecting the facility and its workforce. The group denounces the alleged underhanded methods by Dangote’s associates and affirms its perseverance through such challenges.

In its closing remarks, BUA calls for amicable relations, encouraging Dangote to pursue a constructive path over contentious actions. It promotes a vision of coexistence in the marketplace, free from animosity. BUA remains resolute in its dedication to innovation, ethical conduct, and inclusive growth, pledging to continue propelling Nigeria’s advancement.

BUA’s statement presents a narrative of corporate tenacity and a determined contribution to Nigeria’s economic fabric.
