In a stunning turn of events, a 23-year-old welder has been sentenced to a four-year prison term by the Adentan Circuit Court. Edmond Asare stands guilty of unlawfully entering the residence of a Senior Immigration Officer and making off with her electrical gadgets valued at an astonishing GHC9,378.
Asare, who initially pleaded guilty with an explanation to charges of unlawful damage, unlawful entry, and stealing, found himself in the crosshairs of justice. The presiding judge, Sedinam Awo Balokah, swiftly dispensed justice, deeming Asare’s reasoning as a mere confirmation of his culpability.
The verdict handed down by the court was as follows: three months for causing damage, 12 months for unlawful entry, and four long years for the theft. Fortunately for Asare, these sentences will run concurrently, offering a glimmer of hope amid the darkness of his incarceration.
In a plea for leniency, Asare revealed a surprising twist to his tale. He disclosed that his late father had bequeathed him a plot of land in Ghana’s Eastern Region, which he was willing to sell in a bid to compensate his victim for the stolen items.
Moreover, Asare sought to absolve his accomplice, Isaac Kofi Dordoe, a taxi driver facing charges of dishonestly receiving stolen goods. Asare asserted that Dordoe had no knowledge of the criminal act. He explained that he had merely asked Dordoe to safeguard the ill-gotten gains as collateral while he attempted to repay a sum of GHc1,000.
In light of Asare’s plea, the court decided to grant Dordoe bail, setting it at GHC50,000, contingent on two sureties. The case has been adjourned until October 30, 2023, for further proceedings.
According to Chief Inspector Anim Darko, who led the prosecution, the complainant, Irene Ansom Uroki-Kang, serves as a Senior Immigration Officer residing at Ghana Immigration Quarters, Mile 13, Frafraha Adenta.
As per the prosecution’s account, on July 24, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m., while the complainant was diligently performing her duties, Asare brazenly infiltrated her premises, forcibly entered her room, and made off with a treasure trove of stolen goods. Among the items pilfered were a 43-inch LG TV, an Acer laptop, two Blu Gate mobile phones, and an Itel mobile phone, collectively worth an eye-watering GHC9,378.00.
But Asare’s criminal escapade didn’t end there. On August 30, 2023, around noon, he returned to the scene of the crime with a brazen attempt to steal the complainant’s Toyota Corolla saloon car. However, fortune did not favor him this time, as he was caught in the act by Uroki-Kang herself.
In a courageous act of self-defense, the complainant chased down Asare and enlisted the help of vigilant neighbors to apprehend the audacious thief. Asare was promptly handed over to the Adenta Police Station.
During the subsequent investigation, Asare confessed to his crimes and identified Dordoe as the individual to whom he had sold the 43-inch LG TV and Acer laptop for GHC700 and GHC400, respectively. The authorities wasted no time in apprehending Dordoe, leading to the recovery of the stolen items from his residence in Nanakrom.
In a world often shadowed by crime and misdeeds, justice has prevailed in this case. As Edmond Asare faces the consequences of his actions, there is a glimmer of hope that wrongs can be righted, and the rule of law upheld.
