Accra Marathon Makes a Grand Return

by Oluwatosin Racheal Alabi

According to a report by Graphic Online, the Accra Marathon is set to return on November 11, 2023. This exciting comeback is possible because of a five-year collaboration between First National Bank (FNB) and Dansoman Keep Fit Club (DKFC).

Recently, both parties marked this new beginning with an enthusiastic ceremony at FNB’s Accra office. Warren Adams, the CEO of FNB Ghana, expressed his excitement. He emphasized the bank’s commitment to not just sports, but also to community wellness and unity in Ghana. Similarly, Benjamin Ahulu, the Chairman of DKFC, confirmed they are fully committed to bringing this significant sporting event back to life for the good of the community and the nation as a whole.

But there’s more to this event than just the main 42.2-km marathon. The organizers are introducing other races to attract a broader range of participants. For example, students can join a 5-km run, and corporate teams can compete in a 10-km challenge.

The race is scheduled to kick off at The Point, which is located near the Nungua Barrier. From there, participants will run through the heart of Accra and finish at the grounds of DKFC. Keep in mind, some small changes to the route might be necessary due to ongoing construction in the city.

In addition to all this, the event is embracing modern technology. Advanced chip timing systems will be used to track every runner accurately, replacing the outdated manual systems previously in use.

And for those who prefer to run indoors, the organizers are considering hosting a virtual marathon. They are discussing the possibility with other fitness clubs to make this innovative idea a reality.

Besides the competitive aspect, the marathon aims to promote general wellness. To achieve this, there will be health check stations and blood donation booths along the course.

The Accra Marathon has always attracted a mix of local and international runners, and this year’s event promises to be nothing short of spectacular. So, whether you’re a competitive runner or just looking for an exciting community event, save the date for November 11, 2023.
