Mahama Tells Ambassadors to Pursue Results-Driven Diplomacy

KEY POINTS

  • Mahama pushes a shift to economic diplomacy.
  • Envoys must deliver measurable economic outcomes.
  • Economic diplomacy becomes central to Ghana’s renewal.

President John Mahama has directed Ghana’s newly commissioned ambassadors to embrace a modern diplomatic approach focused squarely on economic outcomes rather than ceremonial protocols.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on November 19, he said foreign missions must now function as operational hubs for growth, trade and investment.

Mahama told the new envoys that global diplomacy has evolved, and Ghana’s representation abroad must evolve with it. He said their work must create direct, measurable value for the domestic economy.

Envoys tasked with deeper economic diplomacy roles

He outlined clear targets, directing ambassadors to expand market access for Ghanaian exports, attract sustainable investment and support priority sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, energy, technology and health.

Mahama said each mission should serve as an active driver of opportunity, using strategic partnerships to funnel capital, knowledge and innovation into the country.

The president stressed that promoting tourism and cultural heritage should also be a central part of their agenda. He urged the diplomats to support Ghanaian entrepreneurs seeking opportunities abroad and deliver efficient consular services to citizens.

Economic diplomacy tied to national renewal

Mahama linked the ambassadors’ appointments to the government’s broader renewal programme, which aims to rebuild confidence in governance, strengthen public institutions and accelerate job creation.

He said Ghana’s reform agenda requires accountability and measurable results at every level of public service, including its overseas missions.

He further reminded the new envoys that they are essential partners in advancing Ghana’s economic diversification strategy. Their work, he said, must help expand exports, secure investment and deepen global partnerships while projecting Ghana as a stable and attractive destination for business.
