The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the withdrawal of officers and the closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
His decision followed an attack by youth on September 21 after the death of a suspect in police custody.
The suspect, identified as Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, was arrested for unlawful entry and stealing. Police said he was receiving medical care at a local hospital before his death.
His passing sparked outrage among community members, who stormed the police station and barracks with stones, clubs, and other objects. They also attempted to set the facility on fire.
IGP responds to violence over suspect’s death
In a statement, the Eastern Regional Police Command confirmed the closure of the station and the withdrawal of all police officers.
Authorities stressed that investigations had begun into the circumstances surrounding Kena’s death.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department are jointly handling the inquiry. Officers are reviewing video footage of the attack to identify and arrest those involved.
Police vow full investigation and justice
The police have assured the family of the deceased and community leaders of a thorough probe. The statement urged the public to resolve grievances through lawful means rather than resorting to violence.
“The perpetrators will be identified, arrested, and brought to justice,” the police said, adding that community engagement remains a priority to maintain peace in the area.
