Key points

  • NPP vice chair blames Akufo-Addo’s downfall on betrayal by appointees.

  • Grassroots members were neglected after the party secured power.

  • Some appointees allegedly supported opposition forces against the president.

Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the 3rd Vice Chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused many of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointees of being his “own enemies.”

Masawudu said the actions of these officials contributed to the collapse of Akufo-Addo’s administration. Speaking on Sompa TV, he claimed that God would judge those who accepted positions but abandoned party supporters who worked to bring the NPP into power.

According to him, grassroots members felt neglected, leading to the party’s declining popularity and eventual loss of support.

Grassroots members left behind by appointees

Masawudu criticized appointees who, after securing top posts at institutions such as COCOBOD and state-owned enterprises, ignored the needs of loyal party workers.

He argued that reshuffling ministers could not have changed the situation because the problem lay in the appointees’ lack of commitment.

“The people Akufo-Addo trusted most were the ones who turned against him,” he said.

Akufo-Addo trusted those accused of betrayal

Masawudu alleged that some senior appointees, including the head of the Minerals Commission, secretly opposed the president and even shared information with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He said Akufo-Addo ignored warnings from within the party and only realized the betrayal after elections had been lost.

“For me, many of the people Akufo-Addo appointed were his enemies. They hated him and contributed to his downfall,” Masawudu said.
