The Municipal Chief Executive for Amenfi East, Raymond Nana Ebbah, has been accused of sending thugs to attack the area’s Member of Parliament, Nicholas Amankwa, and several executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The clash happened on September 10, 2025. According to NDC’s elections director, Dennis Owusu-Mensah, the violence started after a dispute over who should be appointed as District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) Coordinator.
Owusu-Mensah said the MCE rejected the coordinator because the person was not from his camp. When the coordinator returned to the assembly with the MP and other NDC executives, things turned violent.
NDC officials say machete attack left man wounded
The NDC executives allege that the MCE had thugs waiting at his office. When the group arrived, the coordinator was attacked. The MP, constituency chairman and secretary were also beaten.
“In fact, the secretary was slashed with a machete,” Owusu-Mensah told GhanaWeb.
The secretary was later given a medical form and rushed to hospital for treatment. Police have been alerted about the attack.
Party calls for action against Amenfi East MCE
The Amenfi East MCE thugs attack has drawn sharp criticism. Local NDC leaders are calling on the party’s national leadership and the government to step in.
They also accused the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, of backing the MCE’s actions. The executives say such violent incidents show growing intolerance in local politics and must be dealt with quickly.
Residents are waiting to see if the authorities will hold the MCE accountable or allow the matter to fade away.
