The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clinched victory in Ghana’s Akwatia by-election, with its candidate Bernard Bediako Baidoo defeating the New Patriotic Party’s Solomon Asumadu in a closely watched contest.
Baidoo polled 18,199 votes against Asumadu’s 15,235, while the Liberal Party of Ghana’s Patrick Owusu trailed far behind with just 82 votes. Out of 33,819 ballots cast across 119 polling stations, 303 were rejected, according to the Electoral Commission.
NDC takes decisive lead in Akwatia
The win gives the NDC momentum ahead of national elections, strengthening its foothold in a constituency long viewed as competitive. Party supporters erupted in celebrations after the results were confirmed late in the night.
NPP agents abandon collation centre
Only the NPP’s Eastern Regional Secretary was present when the Electoral Commission declared the results. Other NPP agents had abandoned the collation centre earlier, raising tensions and prompting criticism from observers about the party’s handling of the process.
By-election implications
With turnout crossing 33,000 voters, the by-election highlighted strong public interest despite political fatigue. Analysts say the results underscore shifting dynamics in Eastern Region politics and could influence campaign strategies heading into 2026.
