A mysterious skin disease has emerged in Mepe, specifically in the Avetakpo farming community, causing significant distress among residents.
Togbe Kwasi Amedor III, the sub-divisional chief of Mepe Gbavie-Dekume in the Volta Region, has made an urgent appeal to the government for assistance after the outbreak affected over 46 individuals.
The disease has been particularly harsh on children and adults, with symptoms including intense bodily pain and sleep deprivation.
Financial hardship and lack of treatment
The outbreak has led to growing concern as many residents cannot afford medical treatment. According to the Ho East District Health Directorate, approximately GH₵ 6,642.50 is needed for the treatment of those currently affected. However, the community is unable to raise this amount, leaving many without proper care.
In his appeal, Togbe Amedor III explained the community’s dire situation, emphasizing the urgency of government support. He stressed that residents are struggling with financial hardship, which prevents them from seeking medical help.
Lack of diagnosis and water concerns
Adding to the crisis, health officials have not been able to clearly diagnose the disease, leaving residents in uncertainty as it spreads to neighboring communities.
There is no known cause or name for the condition, which only heightens the sense of fear and confusion among locals.
The chief also raised concerns about the community’s access to clean drinking water. Residents rely on shared water sources with cattle, which increases the risk of contamination and may be contributing to the spread of the disease.
The chief has called for not only financial assistance for treatment but also long-term solutions such as better healthcare and access to clean water.
Urgent call for action
Togbe Amedor III has urged the government and health authorities to provide funding for medical treatment, investigate the disease’s cause, and take preventive measures to stop its spread.
He reiterated that the situation is urgent and requires immediate action to safeguard the health and well-being of the community.
