KEY POINTS

  • Armed men partially demolished the MCE’s property on reclaimed land.
  • Residents accuse MCE of illegally building on stadium land.
  • Legal proceedings over the land remain unresolved.

A private building belonging to Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Emmanuel Gemegah was partially demolished on Sunday by unidentified men armed with bulldozers.

The incident occurred on the disputed reclaimed land at Adzido-Aflasco, near Emancipation Beach, around 9 a.m. The attackers also tore down a nearby fence wall belonging to property owner Rocky Amugi. Police arrived on the scene and stopped further demolition.

The land in question has been at the center of heated debates and allegations. Community members claim the MCE used land meant for a stadium to build a private residence, a charge Gemegah has not publicly addressed.

Previous protests and youth warnings

This is not the first time the property has faced resistance. In October 2024, youths in the community protested at the site, marking the building with “Stop Work” graffiti and accusing the MCE of ignoring legal and community concerns.

According to Graphic Online, the protestors argued that the land was originally intended for a stadium to benefit the wider community.

Despite these actions, construction continued, further angering residents. Protesters claimed the matter had already been brought before the High Court in Sogakope but alleged developers disregarded the legal proceedings.

Community seeks accountability as court awaits

Public unrest surrounding the land has intensified, with calls for greater transparency and adherence to the law. Activists insist the reclaimed land should be used for public benefit rather than private projects.

The demolition on Sunday has highlighted unresolved tensions, as many believe the incident reflects growing frustration among residents.

Local authorities have yet to comment on the demolition or provide updates on the legal status of the land dispute. Meanwhile, the public awaits clarity as the case continues in court.
