Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called a visit from Priscilla, a four-year-old girl cured of leprosy, his “best Christmas gift.” Priscilla, who now walks confidently with a prosthetic leg, visited Dr. Bawumia at his residence after returning from Italy, where she underwent treatment and rehabilitation. Furthermore, the emotional encounter was shared on his Facebook page on December 26, 2024.

“I got my best Christmas gift yesterday when Priscilla…returned to Ghana and paid me a visit at home to thank me and show that she can now walk with her new leg,” Bawumia wrote. “To God be the glory.”

Transforming lives through compassion

Priscilla’s journey has been one of resilience and care. Abandoned at birth due to her condition, she was cared for by Father Andrew Campbell at the Weija Leprosarium.

Her severely affected leg was eventually amputated, but thanks to Bawumia’s sponsorship, Priscilla traveled to Italy for specialized medical treatment and the fitting of a prosthetic limb.

After five months of recovery in Italy, Priscilla returned home to Ghana. Accompanied by Father Campbell and officials from the Weija Leprosarium, she headed straight to Bawumia’s residence to express her gratitude.

According to Graphic Online, the Vice President, who serves as Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, has been a consistent advocate for leprosy patients.

A new chapter for Priscilla

Priscilla’s visit symbolizes hope and the power of intervention. In a video shared online, she is seen walking confidently on her prosthetic leg and sharing an emotional embrace with Dr. Bawumia.

Furthermore, the Vice President’s actions underscore the importance of supporting vulnerable individuals and communities.

Priscilla’s recovery shows the success of collaborative efforts between compassionate individuals and medical expertise. Also, her story has touched the hearts of many and serves as an inspiration for what can be achieved through kindness and determination.
