The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the deployment of personnel to strategic locations nationwide to support the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in ensuring peaceful and secure 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. This aims to bolster the country’s election security infrastructure while maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

Military’s supportive role in election security

In a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, the GAF emphasized that its personnel would not be stationed at polling stations but would instead serve as standby support, stepping in only when requested by the police.

“The military’s role is purely supportive, with primary responsibility for election security resting with the Ghana Police Service,” the statement clarified. “This partnership is designed to uphold law and order while protecting the integrity of the electoral process.”

GAF reassured the public that military presence in localities is no cause for alarm, urging Ghanaians to go about their activities without fear. The collaboration between the GAF and GPS underscores their shared commitment to a peaceful election period.

Citizens urged to act responsibly

The GAF also called on Ghanaians to exercise their civic duties responsibly and cooperate fully with security personnel during the elections. Citizens were advised to avoid any actions that could disrupt the peace or jeopardize the stability of the process.

“Maintaining peace is a collective responsibility,” the statement noted. “We urge everyone to refrain from engaging in unlawful activities that could undermine the democratic process.”

The military’s deployment aligns with Ghana’s history of prioritizing peace and stability during elections. This proactive measure seeks to mitigate potential threats and ensure a smooth transition of power.

GAF’s dedication to national sovereignty

Reiterating its dedication to the country’s stability and sovereignty, the GAF assured the public of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the electoral process.

According to Graphic Online, the statement highlighted the military’s critical role in creating a conducive atmosphere for the elections and fostering public trust in the system.

“This deployment demonstrates our resolve to protect Ghana’s democratic integrity while supporting the Ghana Police Service in its primary responsibility,” the GAF added.

Ghanaians are encouraged to remain calm and trust in the security apparatus as the nation moves toward another landmark electoral event.
