Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice-Presidential Candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), reaffirmed the party’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers in Ghana. He made these comments during an engagement with various teacher groups in the Ashanti Region on December 3, 2024.
Dr. Prempeh emphasized that the NPP government, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership, had done more for teachers than any other government in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
According to him, teachers in Ghana now earn three times the salary they received in 2016, citing a significant improvement in compensation.
“We recognize and deeply value the indispensable role teachers play in shaping the educational system, which is the backbone of our nation’s development,” Dr. Prempeh stated.
He also praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s running mate, for playing a crucial role in ensuring these advancements.
The Vice-Presidential candidate’s remarks come amid growing discussions about education in the lead-up to the country’s elections. Teachers, who are central to Ghana’s education system, have been a key focus for the NPP as it prepares for the December 7 polls.
NPP’s commitment to teachers is unmatched
Dr. Prempeh contrasted the NPP’s track record with that of the Mahama administration, arguing that the current government had done far more for teachers than its predecessors.
According to 3news, he pointed out that teacher salaries, starting in 2024, are significantly higher compared to those under the previous administration.
The NPP has been vocal about its dedication to ensuring teachers are adequately compensated and well-equipped to do their jobs effectively.
Dr. Prempeh also noted that the government has continually improved the conditions for teachers across the country, including offering better resources and training programs.
“We understand the sacrifices that teachers make daily, and we are committed to ensuring their welfare is a priority,” he added.
NAPO commissions new multipurpose auditorium for community use
In addition to his remarks about teachers, Dr. Prempeh took the opportunity to commission a new three-story multipurpose auditorium in AshTown.
The modern facility, which is complete with ancillary works and external designs, will be used for a variety of events, including religious gatherings, social functions, and community activities.
“This facility is more than just a building; it is a space for bringing people together,” Dr. Prempeh said during the unveiling. “I hope it will inspire unity and foster development for generations to come.”
The commissioning of this project is part of Dr. Prempeh’s broader efforts to improve the social infrastructure in his constituency.
He believes that such developments will not only serve the immediate needs of the community but will also contribute to long-term growth and cohesion.
