Ghana has announced that it will waive the pre-approval requirement for visa-on-arrival applications between December 1, 2024, and January 15, 2025.
The move, aimed at boosting tourism and simplifying the entry process, is part of the country’s annual “December in GH” campaign, which falls under the broader “Beyond the Return” program.
The visa waiver is expected to increase the number of international visitors during the festive season, particularly those eager to enjoy the country’s cultural events and activities.
In addition, Ghana’s vibrant arts, music, and heritage are major attractions for tourists, and the December in GH campaign has helped solidify Ghana as a top destination for holidaymakers.
A boost to Ghana’s tourism and cultural exchange
The directive for the visa waiver was issued on November 28, 2024, by the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah.
As part of the policy, airlines have been instructed to update their systems to reflect the changes, making it easier for travelers to enter the country without the need for pre-approval.
Moreover, Ghana’s Tourism Authority (GTA) emphasized that the new visa policy is designed to promote cultural exchange and strengthen connections with the global African community.
According to Graphic Online, it also aligns with the government’s goal of positioning the country as a leading global tourism and investment hub.
“The pre-approval waiver exemplifies Ghana’s commitment to welcoming the African diaspora and international visitors, ensuring a smoother, more accessible travel experience,” the GTA said on its website.
December in GH campaign offers unmatched festivities
Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, encouraged travelers to take advantage of the visa waiver and immerse themselves in the December in GH festivities.
“We urge travelers to fully immerse themselves in the exciting December in GH festivities,” Agyeman said. Since its inception in 2019, December in GH has been a key component of Ghana’s tourism strategy, featuring a calendar of official events designed to showcase the country’s rich cultural offerings.
December in GH serves as a significant occasion for the global African family to reconnect and celebrate. With the visa-on-arrival policy in place, visitors can easily travel to Ghana to experience a wide range of events, from music festivals to cultural exhibitions, all set against the backdrop of the country’s warm hospitality.

Furthermore, as the December in GH campaign continues to attract tourists, Ghana is positioning itself as a cultural and tourism powerhouse in Africa, drawing people who are eager to experience its welcoming spirit and vibrant cultural scene.
