  • Interchange expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, benefiting commuters.

Flower Pot Interchange in Accra which has been completed is soon to be commissioned by the President of Ghana H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo on November 19. This infrastructural project which commenced in 2017 aims at addressing traffic problems in some of the most busy corridors in Accra.

As a structure meant to ensure an easier drive and comfort to thousands of daily number of commuters, the interchange helps join some of the most important places out there such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex and Tema by first bridging the northern and southern parts of the Accra-Tema Motorway.

This was revealed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, in a post on his Facebook page, in which he thanked the President for the initiative, which he described as a boost to alleviating traffic congestion that residents experience daily.

Key features of the Flower Pot Interchange

The interchange was constructed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited at a cost of GH¢147 million. It includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct spanning the Accra-Tema Motorway and the Flower Pot Roundabout on Spintex Road.

This new viaduct, along with additional ramps and slip roads, is expected to facilitate more efficient movement along the key transport routes and drastically reduce commute times across the city.

Some of the major features include a ramp that allows drivers to travel from Shiashie onto the viaduct toward Airport Hills and another ramp directing traffic from the viaduct to the motorway toward Tema.

Additional connections include a slip road from the motorway to the Boundary Road Roundabout, a road passing through the old tunnel at East Legon, and a new exit from the Giffard Road Interchange to Cantonments. These modifications are carefully designed to streamline traffic and accommodate high volumes of vehicles, especially during peak hours.

Impact on Accra’s traffic and economic growth

Beyond addressing traffic congestion, the Flower Pot Interchange is seen as a step toward bolstering Accra’s economic prospects.

By improving travel efficiency, the project aims to support businesses and enhance productivity by cutting down travel delays. Commuters, business owners, and residents alike are expected to benefit from faster and more reliable transit options in areas that have historically faced significant bottlenecks.

However, as Accra’s population and vehicle use continue to grow, the interchange addresses an urgent need for sustainable and efficient transportation infrastructure.

According to Graphic Online, this inauguration signals the administration’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development in urban areas, fostering economic growth through improved accessibility.

President’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure

Under the leadership of His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his administration of the state has vowed to spearhead lots of infrastructural development to support the economic zone, and solution to urban transport.

This project is then part of a larger involvement in responding to Ghana’s urgent infrastructure requirements and in offering solutions to some of the problems arising from the expanding urbanization process.

The President’s presence at the ceremony underscores his government’s focus on major infrastructural projects that support business and enhance the well-being of Ghana’s citizens.

Flower Pot Interchange is now ready and designed for Accra residents to gain better transportation systems across key corridors and less congestion. The project is expected to become the basis for further improvement of infrastructure work on connectivity and economic growth in the capital and the future.
