Former NPP Secretary Alleges Death Threat Over Political Dispute

Ohene Ntow claims Bugri Naabu threatened his life.

by Adenike Adeodun

Nana Ohene Ntow, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a shocking claim that Daniel Bugri Naabu, the paramount chief of Namong in the North East Region and former NPP Northern Regional Chairman, once threatened to kill him and other party members over their political stances. According to Ntow, the threat stemmed from their refusal to support Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s presidential ambitions.

Ntow recounted this alarming incident during an interview on Onua TV on August 27, 2024. He detailed how Bugri Naabu openly threatened him at a party council meeting, where tensions were already high. “Bugri Naabu put his finger right in my face and said, ‘You, Ohene Ntow, Kwabena Agyapong, Kojo Mpianim, you don’t want Akufo-Addo to become president; we will kill you.’ It was at a council meeting at Alisa Hotel, and everyone was too stunned to say a word,” Ntow revealed.

He described the chilling atmosphere at the meeting and how it left him feeling deeply unsettled. “It was clear to me then that the party I had joined was not the same. The hostility was palpable,” Ntow said. He explained that such threats and aggressive behavior were far from the democratic values the NPP was supposed to uphold. This incident, according to him, marked a turning point in his relationship with the party.

Ntow further explained that this wasn’t an isolated incident. He claimed that there had been a growing culture of intimidation and threats within the party, particularly against those who dared to have different opinions. He suggested that this toxic environment was a betrayal of the NPP’s foundational principles of democracy and freedom of choice.

His decision to leave the NPP was not taken lightly, but it was welcomed by his family. Ntow revealed that his children were relieved when he was no longer associated with the NPP after he decided to support Alan Kyerematen, a former NPP member who is now running as an independent candidate in the 2024 election. “When the NPP announced I was no longer a member after I chose to back Alan Kyerematen, my children were actually happy,” he shared. “They said, ‘We knew they never really wanted you there, and now you’ve finally let go.'”

This revelation adds another layer of controversy to the ongoing tensions within the NPP, highlighting deep-seated divisions and the lengths some are willing to go to maintain control and influence. Ntow’s story is a stark reminder of the sometimes dangerous undercurrents in political parties, where power struggles can lead to threats and fear, overshadowing the principles of democracy and free speech.

The alleged threats and intimidation tactics mentioned by Ntow have sparked conversations about the need for internal reforms within political parties in Ghana to ensure that they truly represent democratic values and protect their members’ rights to free speech and differing opinions.
